Role: National Consultant for Quality in Reader Education
I am currently National Consultant for Quality in Reader Education. This is challenging role through which I have met and worked with some outstanding teachers and training providers. Working within the Ministerial Education and Development team of the Ministry Division of the Archbishop’s Council allows me to work to support quality provision for Readers throughout the country.
I trained as a graphic designer in Liverpool and worked in the advertising industry in London before taking up teaching in Newcastle.
Over the years I have worked in both schools and colleges and have been much enlightened by all that students have taught me.
I am a firm believer in the car sticker that reads:-
‘Employ a teenager while they know everything!’
I’m married to Richard – a sculptor turned furniture designer turned photographer, now retired and fund raising for community action through his local Rotary Club. Although a very spiritual Christian, he has been overheard saying to our vicar (a believer in collaborative ministry), ‘One of us working in the church is quite enough thank you!’
Our son Chris has followed me into the Advertising Industry and is now working in London, where his mother taps him for lots of freebies for her ministry.
I have been instrumental in the launch of a new sculpture park at the Alnwick Garden in Northumberland, themed ‘Northern Spirituality’. This exhibition now provides an annual platform for young artists to engage with the spiritual in non traditional ways and encourages visitors to The Alnwick Garden to consider their own spirituality.
I became a Reader in St Mary’s Church, Monkseaton (Whitley Bay) in 2000, having been a youth club leader for a number of years. I use a good deal of visual material in my ministry as experience tells me that seeing often helps believing.
Reader Ministry for me is an important ministry in its own right and should be part of the support offered in the community and not necessarily seen as a stepping stone to ordination.
With this in mind, I am secretary to the Diocese of Newcastle’s Readers Board and have been fortunate over the years to work with a great team. |
